  5. NEW  BURST MODE PROTOCOL FROM NOVELL GREATLY IMPROVES WIDE- AND
  6. LOCAL-AREA NETWORKING PERFORMANCE

  8. What: Novell today announced its new Burst Mode protocol (previously
  9. Packet Burst) that significantly improves the performance of customers'
  10. wide- and local-area NetWare networks.  The Burst Mode protocol, which
  11. consists of a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) for the server and a new
  12. shell for the DOS client, maximizes existing network bandwidth by
  13. improving the way packets of information are sent through the network
  14. when using the IPX/SPX protocol.

  16. Depending on the network configuration, customers can realize
  17. improvement in performance by as much as 300 percent on wide-area
  18. networks and up to 50 percent on local-area Ethernet and Token Ring
  19. networks.

  21. Why:  Because many customers rely on NetWare networks to run their
  22. businesses, improvements in networking performance and efficiency help
  23. to increase user productivity and reduce networking costs.

  25. How:  NetWare's Burst Mode protocol allows a client to issue a single
  26. read or write request for blocks of data up to 64 kilobytes. 
  27. Previously, a single request/response was required for each packet
  28. sent.  Improvements in speed occur with the new Burst Mode protocol
  29. because the packets of data are now transmitted back-to-back without
  30. the need for acknowledgement.

  32. When:  The Burst Mode protocol is now available through NetWare Express
  33. to customers who subscribe to Novell's NetWare Software Maintenance
  34. program.  There is no charge for the Burst Mode protocol however,
  35. minimal connect charges do apply.  The Burst Mode protocol is also a
  36. part of Novell's Multiprotocol Router and the recently announced
  37. NetWare Workstation Kit for DOS/Windows.
